We're adding third-party extension support to the DuckDuckGo browser for Windows, starting with the most popular category: password managers.
All Windows users can add the following extensions to their DuckDuckGo browser:
- Bitwarden
- LastPass
New extensions will become available on our Windows Preview build before they are available to all users. Windows Preview users can check Settings > Password Manager Extensions for the current lineup.
Please note: These extensions are independently developed by third parties and not controlled, monitored or endorsed by DuckDuckGo. Before installing or using any extension, you should review the provider’s terms, privacy policy, security practices, and other relevant information to determine whether it meets your needs.
How do I add and manage extensions?
Install third-party password manager extensions by opening your DuckDuckGo browser, going to Settings > Password Manager Extensions, and selecting the Get button next to your preferred password manager. The Get buttons will take you to the extensions' store pages, where you can learn more and Add to DuckDuckGo if you choose. Using these extensions requires setting up accounts with the providers; some are free, and some offer paid plans. These accounts are independently managed by each provider, not DuckDuckGo. Once you’ve installed them, turn your extensions on and off from Settings > Password Manager Extensions. Uninstall extensions completely by going to Settings > Password Manager Extensions, opening the three-dot menu ⋯ next to the extension you want to remove and selecting Remove from DuckDuckGo.
Only one password manager can be active in the browser at a time. DuckDuckGo’s built-in autofill turns off while extensions are in use. If you want to save and autofill passwords with DuckDuckGo again, disable the third-party password manager from Settings > Password Manager Extensions and reenable the built-in one from Settings > Passwords & Autofill. (Any passwords you stored in the built-in password manager will still be there, but if you saved any new credentials to a different password manager, you’ll need to import them to DuckDuckGo.)
You can access your chosen password manager from the shortcut in your toolbar. Set all other preferences, like what kinds of information can be saved and autofilled by the password manager, in the individual extensions’ settings.
Why aren’t all extensions supported?
Unfortunately, most extensions aren't compatible with our browser as-is. We've started by enabling access to the most requested password manager extensions, and we’re actively exploring doing more.
Why does DuckDuckGo use the Chrome Web Store for extensions?
It’s the most efficient way to bring third-party extensions to DuckDuckGo users; developers already publish their extensions through the Chrome Web Store, and we don't have a store of our own. We migrated our Windows browser from using WebView2 to CEF, partly to meet users’ requests for browser extensions. You don't need a Google account to install and use the extensions.
